Jenn's Picks of 2017 - Middle Grade Edition

I read a lot more Middle Grade books this year since I started running a Mock Newbery Club. It was an interesting experience that led to some intriguing books. Here are some of my favorites.

Fiction

30312547

Amina has a beautiful voice but a severe case of stage fright. But when her best friend decides to pick a more "American" name and disaster strikes her family's mosque, she must find the courage to sing out for herself and those she loves.

31146810

A simple road trip to spread her mom's ashes in the city the family loved best turns into an adventure and exploration of grief. It also explores the meaning of family since Fella's moms were not considered by some to be "real" parents and Fella just wants her family back.

32623542

12-year-old Crow knows little about her past other than that she washed up on a small island as a newborn and that the man she calls Osh has taken care of her since then. When a stranger shows up looking for treasure on a nearby island, she has the opportunity to discover more about her past.

31448946

Clayton loves his grandfather, Papa Byrd, and the blues. But when one dies and his mother forbids the other, his whole world is in chaos. How can he respect his mother and still do what he loves best?

32324555

The final chapter of the Lockwood & Co series delivers in a big way. The real villains are revealed and defeated; the identity of the Skull is discovered; the true nature of the Problem is explained; and Lockwood finally confesses his feelings for Lucy. All in all, a satisfying conclusion.

25337548

After a tragic accident, Ethan and his family move from Boston to live with a grandfather he barely knows on the Gulf coast of Georgia. He makes friends with Coralee, a girl with big dreams and even bigger secrets, and finds a mystery involving several townsfolk, a missing mom and a few wolves.

25488892

Olive loves to sing but she always freezes up when her famous mom watches her auditions. Then she discovers Maudville, a strange theater full of interesting performers who want her to star in their new show. But everything is not quite what it appears to be. Recommended for lovers of Coraline and Glee.

31159611

Princess Cora loves her parents and her governess, but she feels trapped in their routine and just wants a bit of freedom. When her fairy godmother fulfills her request for a pet in a very strange way, she takes the opportunity to explore her newfound freedom. Great lessons for helicopter parents and hilarious pictures.

25117605

Harper hates her family's new home in Washington, DC, and wishes they had never moved. But when something strange begins to happen to her little brother, she searches out some unusual assistance to discover what, exactly, is going on and how she can stop it.

25150366

Stef hates working with her dad in the family taco truck and wants to attend a pop concert by her favorite singer instead. But when the city threatens to change the rules and the family business is in jeopardy, she uses her talents and her friendships to save the day.

30037874

Rydr is on her way from California to Chicago on an Amtrak train by herself, moving in with an uncle she has never met. Along the way she meets a bus full of new friends and discovers new things about herself.

Non-Fiction

30258615

Amazing illustrations and interesting facts about the greatest apex predators of today and yesterday.

32333289

Fun book full of information about all the strange and interesting sounds animals make.

34146458

Fascinating factoids about some of the most amazing carnivores on the planet.

30971776

In depth discussion about what the fossil record tells us about the relationship between dogs and humans from the very beginning.

34567445

Super-cute book about Planet Earth that includes good scientific facts as well as puns.

31389271

Fun, cool and interesting. Plus you get to see the real flowers at the end.

31247813

Gorgeously detailed and lush paintings surrounded by a historically appropriate border make this a striking book on an interesting topic. The rhyme and the use of a father and daughter are also nicely done.
34523572

This is a nearly perfect non-fiction picture book for all ages. The telling style of writing with the collage like pictures works quite well. There are facts but not too many for a young reader, with additional information and photos at the end. And the topic could not possibly be more timely.

29447823

Astonishingly good photographs teach the complex life-cycle of a toad. At the end the author also describes the differences between frogs and toads.

31213619

Good information, great photographs and a very charismatic kitten make this a fun way to learn about servals and wildlife rehabilitation.

30364127

Lush illustrations and an elegant but simple rhyming text make this a great introduction to the pond ecosystem. Perspective shines on pages like the one from above with the trees descending to the center of the page. Also striking is the water ripples that also reflect the stars above.

34608694

Short biographies of 13 amazing women who changed the world.

31423417

Nicely done, diverse book about kids around the world and their normal day.

Biography

30340888

What an amazing woman! Discover where the term "bug" entered computer programming and what is possible when you are determined and intelligent.

30008939

Took a bit to get used to Henson's beard when he was young, but overall a great bio for younger kids. I found myself singing along with the Muppets several times.

31922052

Fascinating glimpse into the Pinkerton Agency and the first female detective.

33961446

I could be a bit biased about this one, but I really hope children find it.

Comics

33517044

Fun graphic with some strong messages about identity and friendship. And also subtle messages about what it means to be female in today's world.

33163372

Pig's father built and maintained the windmill and dam that protects his town from a dark, killing fog. But when a tidal wave of fog sweeps he and his friends over the edge, they must find a way to get back before the next wave hits.
33163366

Jack and Lilly search for Maddy in the land beyond the beanstalk. I like the unexpected identity of the Goblin King.

31456601

Very effective explanation of geology and deep time using a groundhog and a worm as our hosts.

31145178

Awesome book about friendship, insecurity, and finding out who you are. Perfect read-alike for Smile and Sisters. In fact, I think I liked this one even better than those.

33163386

Rudy, a dog who can break the barriers of time and space, takes us on a journey to learn the origin of dogs and how they came to be man's best friend.

31852015

Narwhal decides to be a superhero and convinces Jelly to be his sidekick. In his search for his own super power, he helps his friends find theirs.

33921127

The illustrations are gorgeous with fully saturated colors and outstanding designs. The children are so expressive, even when they are in the background. And the story is fun and interesting and doesn't tell kids everything, they have to figure part of it out themselves. Easily one of my favorites for the year.

So there are my picks for school age kids. What are yours?

Jenn's Picks of 2017 - Young Children Edition

I promised you all a list of my favorite books from 2017, but it ended up being quite a bit longer than I expected. So, I decided to break it up into four parts: Young Children, Middle Grade, Teen, and Adult editions. All will be listed alphabetically by title. Here's the Young Children's part.

Board Books

35654896

Cute photo book with our favorite parts of our favorite companions highlighted. This guy on the cover definitely draws kids in.

30364132

The famous author/illustrator of the classic Everyone Poops brings us a fun book about clothes that compares animal coverings to the items that humans use for coverage. Very funny!

Picturebook Fiction

30312876

Travel through a nighttime landscape discovering hidden creatures in the moonlight. Soothing text accompanies shades of blue and purple. Fun for kids who love Highlights magazine and I Spy books.

31491773

In a brilliant follow up to Creepy Carrots, Jasper Rabbit begs his mom to buy him some creepy cool underwear, but finds that it glows in the dark --- and he can't get rid of them!

34144489

Lyrical lines about how a trip to the barber can change your life! Words are strong and crisp, flowing together like the freshest rap. Pictures appear to be oil or acrylic, strong bold colors and confident lines.

34137106

A deceptively simple story about a quiet life experience with which many will identify, yet about a group of people some claim don't belong here. An authentic immigrant experience that is also an authentic American experience. Light, shade, lines and colors all work together.

26836151

I love this one! Begins as your typical counting book with dogs as a theme. Ends with everyone adopted and happy in there appropriately numbered new homes. Recommended for toddlers and dog lovers of all ages.

23208702

A beautiful, twisty picture book with spot on greyhound behavior, body shape and movement. Not as sure about the groundhog, but I don't know one of those personally.

31215005

A hilarious "origin" story for one of the best games used by kids to decide who is doing what. Plus who doesn't love an Adam Rex book?!

33413559

Another great twist on a classic fairytale. I love the gorgeous textiles with bright colors and patterns. I also love the twist of how the prince and princess got their way!

29940755

Roundness is reinforced throughout this book. Not only are there round objects, but also the seasons are featured so the whole narrative is round. The colors are vivid and highlight the roundness, too. Another awesome thing about this book is that it is unexpectedly a daddy book!

31213527

A beautiful, deceptively simple book about some deep subjects, such as mining and family expectations. I love the spread with the sun on the water, stunning. And the prose is almost poetic in its imagery and cadence.

30268422

A great, simple adventure about being lost and how music can save you. The illustrations are outstanding, especially the way music is represented by splashes of color and movement. I hope lots of kiddos find this one.

33163368

Who doesn't love a birthday party? And what kid doesn't constantly ask when their's will be? Beautiful collage work and a very child-like perspective.

Beginning Readers

27465906  33784992

Wow! What a great beginning chapter book series. So simple, inclusive and fun. I was reminded of Frog and Toad in all the best ways. Lovely! Hope these are in the running for the Geisel.

Image result for king and kayla series

Great first chapter book series. I love the way the dog tells the story and the mystery that they all solve together.

32333262

Fun beginning chapter book with a unique family and fun lists.

What I Read in December plus Aggregate Best of 2017 lists

Bit of a long list but I put that down to lots of holiday time. Also, with all the great lists linked below coming out, I found out about some awesome things I had missed!

Unexpectedly good stuff I found myself includes the following:

34227894
Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel by Mariah Marsden

I was a bit worried when I first picked this one up but, luckily, I was pleasantly surprised. Marsden and illustrator Brenna Thumler did an awesome job translating this classic book into a graphic novel. The backgrounds are gorgeous, especially the double-page scenic spreads. The quiet moments work really well, too. Anne's first encounter with Gilbert and the Octobers quote were my favorite parts. I teared up at the end, even though I knew what was going to happen.

26958226
Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett
First in a duology, the story builds slowly but is full of adventure with a pretty good mystery at the center. Kamzin and her sister, Lusha, grew up in the shadow of the tallest mountain in the Empire. When Lusha runs off with the Royal Explorer's assistant, Kamzin joins the strangely young Royal Explorer on a dangerous expedition to find a secret relic for the Emperor. Sometimes the love triangle thing seemed a bit forced, but overall it held up well. The last quarter of the book reveals all kinds of things and leaves you with an almost literal cliffhanger.
